What is IPL Therapy?
Lumenis M22™ IPL (Intense Pulse Light) is renowned for technological breakthroughs ophthalmic lasers and has a long list of industry gold standards. The Lumenis M22™ safely stimulates Meibomain glands to help return them to their normal function.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is not a laser, but a light-based therapy. It has long been used in dermatology to treat vascular facial lesions, rosacea spots, and pigmented areas.
Filters are used to apply specific wavelengths of light to target abnormal blood vessels in the eyelids and skin that are often responsible for causing eyelid inflammation.
What can you expect?
The treatment delivers a series of high intensity light pulses of multiple wavelengths to stimulate production of oils from the Meibomian glands, in effect activating the nerve supply to the glands.
The treatment is completely pain free and only takes up to five minutes to complete per session. Although 3 treatments are recommended over a period of 6 weeks, many patients notice a difference in their eye comfort within a few hours to days following the first treatment.
IPL - Lumenis M22(TM) FAQs:
The effectiveness of the treatment is dependant of a specific protocol used: Your doctor will begin your IPL treatment by placing shields over the eyes to protect them from the light pulses.
Then a thin layer of cooling gel is applied to the treatment area and a Lumenis M22™ device will deliver the pulses of light to the area underneath the lower lashes, this usually take approximately 10-15 minutes.
During the treatment you will feel a slight warm sensation, but no pain is involved. We may also offer Meibomain gland expression if it is a suitable treatment indicator.
Each session lasts about 15 minutes, depending on the severity of your condition, and we recommend 3 to 5 treatments, with 3 to 4 weeks in between.
There are cases where patients experience some discomfort and redness in the treated areas. However typically this disappears within a couple of hours, with most patients resume their daily routine the very same day.
